Chaulmugra (Gynocardia Odorata) in Leprosy

Sir,?Since Gurjun oil has been adopted in the treatment of leprosy, aU other medicines, however efficacious they were in former days, have been given up. A change sometimes comes over the spirit of the age when all by-gone doctrines are considered erroneous, and men propounding and advocating them are considered blind?such has been the case frequently in our profession. Whenever a new medicine is advocated, men in the profession take it up with such earnestness that they make it a panacea for all diseases. Without deprecating the efficacy of Gurjun oil, I beg to observe that Ghaulmugra pulp and Chaulmugra oil have proved very efficacious in my hands. I have treated about a dozen cases of leprosy with this medicine, and I scarcely remember to have failed in any one. In some the cure was perfect, and in others when recovery was progressing favorably the patient left off the treatment. The action of the medicine^ is slow like all other medicines in this disease, but it is sure. The action of the medicine is better and more quickly seen in the ansesthetic variety than in the tuberculated. If the treatment is commenced early, the signs of improvement are perceptible in from 18 to 25 days.
